Northrop Grumman received $13 million to develop radar for NATO's RQ-4D Phoenix drone

Northrop Grumman has signed a contract with the U.S. Air Force to develop an advanced radar for drones that are in service with NATO countries.

Here's What We Know

First of all, we are talking about the drone RQ-4D Phoenix produced by the same company Northrop Grumman. A more advanced radar will be able to combine data from different sensors and continuously track moving targets. Also, the new technology will make it possible to obtain clear images of selected objects.

The radar will be tested in Italy at the Sigonella air base, which is located on the island of Sicily. Work on the contract should be completed within a year. In the future, Northrop Grumman will be engaged in maintenance and repair of hardware to support NATO missions in different countries.

Recall that the RQ-4D Phoenix is a modified version of the strategic drone RQ-4 Global Hawk (Block 40). It is equipped with Rolls Royce North America AE 3007H engine, which allows speeds up to 575 km/h. The drone is a key part of NATO surveillance.
