In 2022, the U.S. will double the number of submarines in Britain - some submarines can carry Trident II missiles with nuclear warheads

The United States was more likely to send nuclear-powered submarines to the United Kingdom in 2022 than last year.

Here's What We Know

The UK Defense Journal reports this. According to the publication, the British Royal Navy's Scottish base, Clyde, has received twice as many U.S. Navy nuclear-powered submarines this year than during 2021.

Since Feb. 24, when Russia invaded Ukraine, the port at Faslane has received 85 submarines. Among them were the most advanced Virginia-class submarines, which, incidentally, will begin receiving hypersonic weapons at the end of the decade. In 2021, only 43 ships visited the port.

Also temporarily in Scotland were Ohio-class strategic submarine cruisers, which can carry Trident II intercontinental missiles (up to 20) with nuclear warheads. For example, submarines USS Rhode Island and USS Georgia. Usually such moves are not publicized. The last Ohio submarine that was in Scotland (in 2019) is the USS Alaska
