Futuristic parking: a €60 million underwater bicycle parking garage built in Amsterdam

In Amsterdam, a futuristic car park has been opened at the Central Station, which is located underwater. There are no cars here, as the underwater parking is for bicycles only.

Here's What We Know

The car park can accommodate 7,000 bicycles: 6,300 personal and 700 for rent. But in February the plan is to expand it to a total of 11,000 spaces. Why bikes? About 30% of Amsterdam uses this form of transport, and the Central Station receives 200,000 travellers a day, half of whom arrive on bicycles.

It took four years to build the car park. The builders first drained the water from the reservoir in front of the station, laid the foundations and columns, which were delivered by barge, and loaded the roof of the structure. The total cost of the project was €60 million.

The car park is open 24 hours a day. The first 24 hours are free, after which the rate will be €1.35 for each subsequent day.
