Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition feels great on Xbox consoles

With the announcement of Age of Empires IV and Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition on the console earlier this year, many users had a question: will it be convenient to play the strategy game in real time on the controller? Yes, the author of The Verge, who has already tried the strategy and shared his personal feedback, answers this question.

Here's What We Know

We are talking about Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition, which became available for Xbox consoles just today, 31 January. According to the author, the developers from World's Edge did a good job and perfectly redesigned the game interface for the controller.

For example, you can double-tap the A button to select units of the same time. You hold down the button and move the left joystick to select units within a certain area. There are also several shortcuts that make it much easier to organise your little minions. The game will tell you if you have any inactive villagers and allow you to select those lazy slobs by pressing the D-pad.

Of course, there is also automation. By clicking the right handle, you can automate how villagers collect resources depending on your goals. You can take a balanced approach or set it to a function that prioritises food and gold if you're going to get a large army. Then, the next time you create a peasant, it will automatically fulfil your bets without you having to manually manage them.

These and other smaller innovations to the game have made it very controller-friendly, though of course it's still not the ideal way to play and will definitely take some getting used to, especially if you haven't played a strategy game on consoles before.
