Reach PLC, owner of the Mirror, Daily Record and Manchester Evening News, uses ChatGPT neural network to write news

UK company Reach PLC, which owns a number of brands including the Daily Star, Mirror, Daily Record and Manchester Evening News, has begun using the ChatGPT neural network to write news stories.

Here's What We Know

Reach PLC is still using artificial intelligence in test mode. The company's chief executive Jim Mullen has said it is setting up a task force to determine how well it can integrate the neural network into the journalists' workflow.

Reach PLC sees the potential of artificial intelligence and will seek to find a way to creatively apply ChatGPT. Technicians will explore the capabilities and limitations of the neural network. In test mode, the chatbot writes news stories about the weather and traffic on the roads.

In January, the company reported a drop in annual profits due to high inflation and lower advertising costs. Reach PLC plans to lay off 200 employees. It argues that using artificial intelligence to write news is not a desire to cut costs but rather a need to integrate modern technology.
