Best projector for bedroom setup?

Hey guys, I need your help! I want to surprise my girlfriend by upgrading our bedroom TV to a projector for an epic movie night experience. We also love playing video games together, so I want to make sure the projector is good for gaming too. I'm thinking of ditching our old 32-inch TV and going all-in on a projector setup.

Our bedroom is about 12x14 feet, and I'm not sure if I should project directly onto the wall or get a projector screen. I've got a budget of around $1000, and I want the best picture quality possible. Would 1080p be enough, or should I go for 4K?

I'm also wondering what screen size would be best for our room. And for gaming, I know I need to look for low input lag, but are there any other features I should keep an eye out for?

Oh, and one more thing – do you think projecting on the wall would be fine, or is a projector screen the way to go?

Any advice would be much appreciated! Thanks in advance, everyone.

Hey OneTwo3! I’m in a similar situation. I've been eyeing a few projectors myself but haven't made a decision yet. I want something easy to install and with good image quality. Have you thought about how bright the projector needs to be? I’m worried a mini projector might not be bright enough...

Projecting onto a wall can work, but you'll get better results with a dedicated projector screen. The screen will provide a smoother, more reflective surface, which enhances the image quality. For your room size, a 100-inch screen should be perfect. As for resolution, 1080p should be plenty for bedroom viewing, but if you want future-proofing, a 4K projector might be worth the investment. Look for something from these brands: BENQ, ViewSonic, Epson, or Optoma.

For gaming, you definitely want a projector with low input lag. The BenQ X3000i and Optoma UHD55 are both excellent options, with input lag under 20ms (4ms in 1080p) and 4K resolution for future-proofing. The x3000i even has a special gaming mode that optimizes the settings for the best gaming experience. As for screen size, a 100-120 inch screen should work well for your 12x14 foot bedroom. GL

Wow, some great advice here! To sum it up, look for a projector with low input lag and high refresh rates if you’re into gaming. Consider 4K resolution for the best visual experience. For your room size, a 100-120 inch screen should be perfect. And definitely use a screen instead of projecting directly on the wall for the best picture quality. Don't forget to think about audio and seating for the ultimate gaming and movie-watching experience!

As someone who spends way too much time gaming and watching movies, I can attest to the importance of a comfortable seating arrangement. Invest in a cozy couch or some bean bag chairs for those long gaming sessions and movie marathons. Trust me, your back will thank you!

I highly recommend getting a projector screen for both gaming and movies. A screen will provide a smoother, more uniform surface that enhances picture quality and reduces glare compared to a wall. The Silver Ticket STR-169100-HC (100-inch) is a great option for under $200. It's easy to install and comes with a black border to frame the image nicely.

Who needs a fancy screen anyway? Just project straight onto the wall and call it a day! Sure, the picture might be a little warped and the colors might be off, but think of all the money you'll save! Plus, you can tell everyone you've got that trendy "distressed" look going on :)

Haha, nice try, but no.

Hi onetwo3, I've been using a benq ht2050a in my bedroom, and it's fantastic. My bedroom is about the same size as yours, and I have it mounted on the ceiling. It saves a lot of space and gives a great viewing angle. If you're deciding between projecting on the wall or getting a screen, I'd suggest going with a screen for better picture quality, especially if you want those vibrant colors to pop!

Just use your phone as a projector, bro. Who needs a real one anyway? XDDD

When setting up your bedroom projector, it's important to consider the input lag, which is the delay between your actions and what you see on the screen. Lower input lag means a more responsive viewing experience, which is crucial not only for gaming but also for watching fast-paced movies or sports. The minimal lag for now goes as low as ~4ms on 1080p. Hope this helps!
