Italy prepares seventh military aid package for Ukraine, which will include SAMP/T SAMs

Following the US, Italy is also preparing a new military assistance package for the Ukrainian Armed Forces.

Here's What We Know

This was announced by Defence Minister Guido Crosetto on 30 May. This will be the seventh aid package. The minister did not disclose details of the new package, but according to local media, it will include an anti-aircraft missile system SAMP/T. Additionally, Italy will transfer other air defence systems to Ukraine.

Flashback

SAMP/T is an anti-aircraft missile system for surface-to-air missiles. It was developed by the European consortium Eurosam (a joint venture of MBDA Italy, MBDA France and Thales). The system is designed to provide anti-aircraft protection for mechanized units as well as anti-aircraft protection of important targets from massive attacks. The SAM is capable of destroying air targets at altitudes up to 25 km and ranges up to 100 km. Incidentally, the AFU already has one SAMP/T battery in service.
