Light Phone 2: anti-smartphone returns in a new guise

American startup Light came out on Indiegogo with a new version of the minimalistic phone - Light Phone 2. The team calls for more time to put the smartphone aside and just enjoy life.

What's new?

Instead of a tiny display and keyboard, like in the original Light Phone of 2015, the gadget got a monochrome E Ink screen and knows a little more. The new model has a full-fledged phone book, a function to send SMS messages and an alarm clock. Developers also ponder over the additional features of the phone, such as navigation (at the "right now" style), voice control, music player, calculator, built-in dictionary, weather forecast and carpelling (if they find a service that agrees to integration) . What ideas will survive to the final version is unknown. But social networks, news feeds, e-mail and even more advertising in Light Phone 2 will not be exactly.

The device is designed to work in 4G LTE networks. It is built on the basis of Qualcomm MSM8909W processor (Snapdragon Wear 2100 series for wearable devices). The amount of RAM is 1 GB, built-in - 8 GB. The firm platform LightOS is based on Android, the developers also promised to think about the convenient transfer of the address book from the main smartphone. The body of anodized aluminum measures 91x55x6.5-7.5 mm and weighs 80 grams.

The 500 mAh battery provides up to 5 days of standby time (the predecessor had 20 days), a full charge will last for several hours of talking. It is planned to support Wi-Fi and GPS.

The price is a sore point

If the first anti-smartphone team could buy for $ 100, then for Light Phone 2 asking for $ 250, and the standard price after the release will be as much as $ 400. The device users will receive not earlier than April of the following year 2019, but this did not stop anyone. Since the start of the campaign, only a few days have passed, and the fees are already approaching $ 500,000. This is twice as much as is necessary to start production.

Competitors

Of the cheaper options, you can recall the Japanese NichePhone-S for $ 95. Elari CardPhone was sold in our stores before, but it's already out of production. But on AliExpress you can find different versions of phones the size of a credit card from the brand AIEK / AEKU. These are the most affordable solutions for $ 12-30 depending on the model.
