Samsung's new foldable OLED panel has passed the MIL-STD-810G ruggedness test

Our colleagues at Sammobile are reporting that Samsung Electronics' Samsung Display division has announced that its new foldable OLED panel has passed the MIL-STD-810G test. This compliance to a series of tests developed by the US Department of Defence proves that this Samsung OLED panel is extremely rugged and reliable.

Here's What We Know

Samsung Display's latest generation 7-inch foldable OLED panel continued to operate normally under fairly challenging conditions for 4 hours. A 6mm layer of ice covered the panel after it was sprayed with water at -10ºC. What's more, the new folding panel from the company continued to work without any degradation in performance even in ambient temperatures ranging from -32ºC to +63ºC for 2 hours. This test was repeated 3 times for 12 hours.

The South Korean display giant's latest OLED panel also continued to perform after shock resistance tests. It was dropped 26 times from a height of 1.22 metres, simulating real-life smartphone usage conditions. The panel was also subjected to 10.5G pressure while rotating at speed. This proves that the panel continues to work properly even during extreme actions and movements.

All these tests were conducted by UL (Underwriters Laboratories) Solutions, which is a global safety science company founded 130 years ago. The company did not say whether the new 7-inch OLED panel was used in the current generation of smartphones. It also did not say whether the panel was used in any of the existing foldable Galaxy smartphones.

About the MIL-STD-810G protection standard

The MIL-STD-810G standard describes a series of tests to verify the resistance of equipment to various environmental conditions. Compliance criteria include resistance to:

  • Temperature extremes (high and low temperatures)
  • Humidity
  • Shock and vibration
  • Dust and sand
  • Altitude, including exposure to low atmospheric pressure
  • Salt spray for corrosion resistance
  • Solar radiation

Each test details the test methodologies and environmental parameters. Compliance with the standard requires demonstration that the equipment can operate effectively and maintain its performance after exposure to the specified conditions, making it suitable for use in extreme and variable environments.
