Nearly 8 million jobs in the UK could be at risk from the growing spread of generative artificial intelligence technologies. This conclusion was reached by analysts from the Institute for Public Policy Research (IPPR).

Here's What We Know

The study warns of the risk of a "jobs apocalypse". And women, young workers and low-paid employees will be the most vulnerable to automation.

According to an IPPR analysis covering 22,000 work tasks, 11 per cent of tasks can currently be automated using existing AI technology. However, as the technology continues to evolve, this figure could rise to 59 per cent, affecting more complex non-routine tasks.

Routine cognitive tasks such as database management, scheduling and inventory will be at first threat, which could displace jobs in secretarial, administration and customer service. A second wave of AI adoption could affect higher-paying occupations involving database creation, copywriting and graphic design.

IPPR warns that in the worst case scenario, a second wave of AI could result in the loss of 7.9 million jobs, offsetting any productivity gains with zero GDP growth over three to five years. In the best case of a full AI-assisted expansion of the workforce, jobs would be saved and the size of the economy could grow by 4% or about £92bn a year ($116.15bn).

The think tank calls on the government, employers and trade unions to take urgent action to prevent a "jobs apocalypse" and ensure new AI technologies are properly managed for economic growth and improved living standards.
