Claims against Meta and Google: Restrictions on reproductive health advertising and misinformation

MSI Reproductive Choices and the Center for Combating Digital Hate accuse Meta and Google of abusing reproductive health advertising and information in Asia, Africa, and Latin America.

Here's What We Know

The report details the restrictions on local abortion providers' advertising and the spread of misinformation.

In the Mexican context, where abortion is decriminalised but not legalised in all regions, Meta prevents MSI from sharing abortion-related content, citing local restrictions. Similar issues have been observed in other countries, such as Nepal and Vietnam, where ads related to cervical cancer screening and IUD information have also been blocked.

The organisations also allege abuses targeting MSI workers in Kenya and Ghana. They also note the spread of disinformation through Meta platforms, including WhatsApp.

Representatives of Meta and Google claim that they adhere to their own rules and regulations, but intend to review the report's content and take appropriate action.
