Samsung is considering adding generative artificial intelligence technology to its Bixby voice assistant to enhance its functionality and appeal.

Here's What We Know

Bixby, which launched in 2017 alongside the Galaxy S8 smartphone, offered a number of features including translation and recommendations, but its capabilities were relatively limited compared to modern generative AI-based chatbots such as ChatGPT.

In an interview with CNBC, Won-joon Choi, executive vice president of Samsung's mobile division, said that the company should "rethink" Bixby's role to upgrade it with large language model technology (LLM) and generative AI.

Choi said that integrating generative AI will make interacting with Bixby more natural and develop an interface that better supports Samsung products within their ecosystem. However, specific timelines for the introduction of these features have not yet been announced.

Samsung is focusing on developing artificial intelligence capabilities at a time when investors are keeping a close eye on Apple's plans in this area. Apple is also expected to introduce some AI features in its products at its annual WWDC developer conference in June.

The integration of advanced generative AI technologies is seen as an important step to boost the competitiveness of Samsung's devices and meet growing user demand for more advanced AI capabilities.
