Spain prepares large-scale modernisation of Leopard 2 tanks

The Spanish Ministry of Defence has announced a major upgrade of Leopard 2 tanks in versions A4 and E, which will significantly improve their mine protection and strengthen the all-round defence of the turret and hull.
Here's What We Know
The upgraded tanks will be equipped with L55A1 guns, which allow the use of remotely fired shells, increasing anti-tank capabilities. In view of the fighting in Ukraine, Spain is also considering equipping the tanks with the Israeli Trophy active defence system to combat FPV drones.
In general, the upgrade will meet Leopard 2A8 standards, although some elements may be of Spanish manufacture. The Leopard 2E tanks will be upgraded to the Leopard 2EM level, and the decommissioned Leopard 2A4s will most likely be transferred to Ukraine.
