Volkswagen has published new sketches of its upcoming entry-level electric car, which is intended to succeed the discontinued VW Up! model and compete with low-cost Chinese electric cars. The car was initially announced on 5 February, and the company shared additional images on social media on 13 February.

Here's What We Know

The concept version of Volkswagen's new electric car is due to be unveiled in March this year. The production one will appear in 2027 with a starting price of 20,000 euros (about $20,800 at current exchange rates). Andreas Mindt, VW's design chief, said the new electric car will be compact on the outside but functional on the inside. He characterised the design as charismatic and stylish, with high attention to every detail.

The compact five-door hatchback shows similar proportions to the VW concept ID. Life 2021, but is characterised by a more playful design language. The headlights with 3D LED graphics are integrated into the black plate, along with the illuminated VW logo. In profile, the sculpted wheel arches stand out, accentuating the large alloy wheels. The boot door has large glass with cut-outs for the rear lights.

Although Volkswagen has not officially confirmed the name of the new model, there are a few hints available to the public. The initial teaser featured the number plate "ID.One", while the Instagram hashtag to the sketches suggests that the concept could be called "ID.Every1". In that case, the production version will likely be called ID. 1.

ID. 1 will be built on a shortened version of the MEB platform shared with the larger ID. 2. The compact dimensions suggest a lower-capacity and more affordable battery pack, probably combined with a single electric motor.
