Porsche has decided not to wait for future environmental requirements, but is already testing closed-loop recycling of high-voltage batteries. The aim is to recover valuable materials, minimise dependence on unstable raw material markets and make the production of electric cars more environmentally friendly.

Here's What We Know

The project is broken down into three phases. First, used batteries from test cars are recycled into so-called "black mass" - a granulate containing nickel, cobalt, manganese and lithium. Porsche has already received around 65 tonnes of such raw materials.

The next step is to isolate pure materials for further use in the production of new batteries. The company relies on the quality and purity of secondary raw materials to keep the efficiency of electric cars high.

In the third step, Porsche will test the production of battery cells containing recycled materials and verify their efficiency in its electric cars.

Porsche and the circular economy

Porsche aims to create a closed-loop system for batteries and is already preparing for future EU environmental regulations that will come into force from 2031. The introduction of recycled materials will not only reduce environmental impact, but will also emphasise the company's responsible use of resources.
