The US Army has signed a contract with Lockheed Martin for the production of Precision Strike Missiles (PrSM) as part of the Increment One programme. The total value of the deal is $4.9 billion.

Here's What We Know

The contract was signed by the US Army Contracting Command in Redstone Arsenal, Alabama. It was awarded following a competitive request for proposals that received only one offer.

The PrSM is designed as a replacement for the ATACMS missile. They are designed to be used with the M270 Multiple Launch Rocket System and the M142 HIMARS High Mobility Artillery Rocket System.

The Increment One programme focuses on improved range, accuracy and responsiveness. The missiles are designed to strike key targets such as command posts, air defence systems and logistics facilities.

The contract is the result of a series of successful tests. In May 2023, testing at the Vandenberg Space Force confirmed the missile's extended range. In November of the same year, a live-fire test was conducted at the White Sands Range, and in February 2024, another successful test took place, which allowed the launch of mass production.

Further upgrades will expand the missile's capabilities, including homing for mobile targets and multi-mode guidance. Production will continue until 30 March 2030, and the allocation of funding will be determined separately for each order.
