Following a test earlier this year, Google has begun rolling out an updated Material 3 design for Gmail on iPhone and iPad. This design has long been used in Android apps and web versions of Google services, but changes on iOS are much slower to come.

Here's What We Know

Among the notable updates, the search bar has a soft oval shape instead of the old rectangle with rounded corners. In the bottom navigation bar, if Google Chat or Meet is activated, the active tab is now highlighted with a filled background, not just a highlighted icon.

The Create email button now has the shape of a rounded rectangle, and the main accent colour of the interface is blue, which has replaced the traditional red. The menu with folders and labels remains unchanged. In addition, the three-dot icon in the message viewer has changed to a horizontal view.

The updated look of Gmail for iOS is part of Google's overall strategy to unify the design across all services. Material 3 is already available in Google Chat, Home, Maps, Meet, Photos, and Search.

In addition to Gmail, Google Calendar has also received an update. Soon, it will have a function to create events for birthdays, which will complement the usual "Meeting" and "Task". This new feature is not yet widely available.

Google continues to add AI capabilities to its services and has offered Gmail users on Android, iOS, and in the browser a "smart search" that will make it easier to view emails.
