Foxconn, the same Taiwanese company that assembles the iPhone, is preparing to enter the US electric car market. As in the case of Apple, Foxconn will be engaged only in the production of cars, leaving marketing and sales to its partners.

Here's What We Know

The company recently announced that it was preparing to launch its first model - the Foxtron Model C - on the US market. However, it will not be sold under this name. Foxconn will use a long-standing practice of the automotive industry - contract manufacturing - and will release a crossover under the brand of one of its partners, the name of which is still kept secret.

Information about Foxconn's plans was confirmed by Jun Seki, a former top Nissan executive who now heads the company's electric vehicle division. According to Automotive News, in a behind-the-scenes conversation at the Taipei Mobility Mega Show, Seki confirmed the intention to release the Model C through a third-party brand, but declined to name a specific customer, citing privacy policies.

It's worth noting that the Model C is already on sale in other markets. In Taiwan, Foxconn's home country, the car is known as the Luxgen n7. However, given the current geopolitical climate and trade barriers, it's unlikely that Foxconn will simply start importing the Model C from Taiwan to the US.

That's why the company is setting up its own production facility at the former General Motors plant in Lordstown, Ohio. This plant produced many GM models since the late 1960s - from the Chevrolet Bel Air to the Cavalier and Cobalt. The plant was later sold to bankrupt Lordstown Motors and in 2022 was taken over by Foxconn.
