Ex-Rockstar Games employee reveals how long GTA VI has been in production

Rockstar Games is known for its meticulous approach to game development. Each project takes at least 6 years to complete, after which gamers get a technological and narrative masterpiece that raises the bar for the entire industry.
As we await the release of GTA VI, many gamers are curious to know how long the game has been in development, and this question has been answered.
Here's What We Know
Former 3D environment artist at Rockstar Games, David O'Reilly, left the studio in 2023 and has been working on Grand Theft Auto VI.
In his new video, he revealed that full production of the ambitious crime action game started in 2018 - right after the release of Red Dead Redemption II.
The artist noted that since he left the team, his colleagues have done an incredible job and the new trailer impressed him with the degree of elaboration of every element of Vice-City and its inhabitants.
Thus, by the time of release in May 2026, GTA VI will be in development for 8 years, which is in line with previous Rockstar projects and works of the same level of other studios. For example, that's how long it took to complete Cyberpunk 2077.
When We Can Expect It
Grand Theft Auto VI will be released on 26 May 2026 PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series.
