Google has officially confirmed: in the coming months, Gemini's generative AI will appear in cars that support Android Auto. Later in 2025, it will also be introduced in cars with Google Built-In, the company's proprietary operating system.

Here's What We Know

Google calls the integration of Gemini into Android Auto "one of the biggest transformations of the in-car experience in a long time." Gemini will be used in two main ways:

  • as a voice assistant instead of Google Assistant: communication will become more "human" with natural language voice commands. You can send messages, control music, search for places on a map, put contacts in your phonebook and translate messages.
  • Gemini Live mode will allow for full conversations on the go, from planning a holiday to discussing recipes or the history of ancient Rome. Google claims that this integration "reduces cognitive load" as it becomes easier to manage the machine's functions.

For now, all queries are handled through Google's cloud servers, but the company is working with automakers to enable Gemini to run locally directly on the cars' on-board computers. This will improve the reliability and speed of the AI, especially when network coverage is poor. That said, Gemini doesn't yet interact with data from in-car cameras and sensors, though Google recognises the potential of the idea.

Gemini will appear in Android Auto in the same countries where Google's AI model of the same name is already available, with support for more than 40 languages. A large-scale launch is planned for the second half of 2025.
