The world of fan games has once again faced a harsh reality: the long-awaited Bionicle: Masks of Power, which enthusiasts have been working on for eight years, has been closed at the request of The LEGO Group. The game's developers announced this in a public document, revealing the details of the situation to numerous fans who were looking forward to finally playing the coveted game. The team, which was preparing to release a demo version this August, claims that LEGO has demanded that the project be stopped and all references to the game be removed from public access.

Here's What We Know

In their statement , the developers emphasised that they had always intended to follow the official LEGO rules to avoid legal claims from the company, which protects its copyrights. Despite these efforts, the "hammer of justice" still fell. Although no official reason was given for the closure, the team suspects that the reason is that the average person could mistake their game for an official product rather than a fan project.

In response to this painful news, the development team released a video walkthrough of the game's demo and announced the creation of a new independent studio called Unmasked Games. The name itself is a great one, as it hints at Bionicle's roots, but also symbolises the removal of the mask for future creative endeavours. The developers concluded their statement with the words: "This is devastating news for our entire team, but we are also incredibly excited about what the future holds and what we will have the opportunity to create next. We hope you are all as excited as we are. One last time... May the Great Spirit guide you."

It's worth noting that the Bionicle product line hasn't been actively supported for quite some time, but we won't be seeing the fan project anymore.
