James Cameron to adapt Joe Abercrombie's dark fantasy The Devils after completing work on the third Avatar

After the grandiose Pandora saga, James Cameron is preparing for a new universe: the director and his studio Lightstorm Entertainment have acquired the rights to adapt the dark fantasy novel The Devils by the star author Joe Abercrombie. Cameron himself will co-author the script with the writer.
Here's What We Know
While fans are looking forward to the premiere of Avatar: Fire and Ash in December this year, James Cameron is already planning his next big project. On his Facebook page, the director announced that Lightstorm Entertainment has acquired the rights to adapt The Devils, a bestselling novel that has rapidly risen to the top of the book charts in the US and UK.
"The Devils is a dark fantasy with horror elements, where the protagonist Brother Diaz enters the Holy City hoping for an honourable mission, but instead finds himself surrounded by a flock of killers and monsters. To fulfil his mission, he will have to resort to bloody methods - and this is just the beginning of a bizarre story in which the line between good and evil is often blurred.
In his speech, Cameron called the novel "a sharply witty adventure on the edge of horror", stressing that Abercrombie has created an ensemble of charismatic characters and an unpredictable plot with his trademark black humour. The director admitted that he had long dreamed of working with the author, and he is confident that their joint work on the script will be extremely exciting: "Joe writes very visually, almost in scenes, and the structure of his novel is almost cinematic."
Joe Abercrombie, known for his First Law and Age of Ultron trilogies, as well as his involvement in the creation of the Love, Death Robots series and the Borderlands film, also expressed his enthusiasm: "I can't think of a better director to bring this strange and wonderful story to the screen."
This is not the only "non-Avatar" project in Cameron's plans: he has also recently acquired the rights to the upcoming novel Ghosts of Hiroshima by Charles R. Pellegrino, which he also plans to adapt for film.
Meanwhile, Avatar: Fire and Ash is preparing to premiere on 19 December 2025.
