Skechers has introduced trainers with an AirTag compartment: now you can "strap" your child into the shoe
Skechers has launched Go Run Elevate 2.0 - Find My Skechers, a range of children's shoes equipped with a hidden Apple AirTag compartment. It is located under the insole in the heel and allows parents to track the location of the shoe - and therefore the child - via the Find My app.
Here's What We Know
The small screw compartment is covered by a reinforced lid and above it is a perforated, breathable Goga Mat insole that provides comfort while walking and running. The shoe is designed for children from toddlers to around the age of ten.
While technologically the feature serves to track shoes, Skechers is careful to state "you will know where your child's shoes are" - avoiding an explicit statement about tracking the child themselves. Apple claims that AirTag is not designed to track people and contains mechanisms against unwanted surveillance. But in this case, given that the wearer of the device - the child - is not the owner of the AirTag itself, triggering the defence is unlikely.
Externally, the shoes are made of mesh and synthetic material, with elasticated laces, an adjustable instep strap and a durable rubber insole. The trainers are washable, but the manufacturer does not specify whether the AirTag needs to be removed before washing. The model is priced between $52 and $58.
