Sony's Xperia 1 VIII is set to drop the narrow vertical camera strip that has defined the series for years. CAD renders published by MyMobiles — sourced from factory drawings — show a wide, squared camera island in its place. That's the first major visual overhaul the Xperia 1 line has seen, and it arrives as Sony fights to stay relevant in the premium phone market.

The redesign

The new camera island houses three lenses, a flash, and additional sensors. It protrudes 2.79mm from the body, pushing the total thickness to 11.37mm. The body itself measures 161.9mm tall, 74.4mm wide, and 8.58mm thick — marginally shorter than the Xperia 1 VII but a little wider and notably thicker than the VII's 8.2mm baseline. Sony hasn't said why, but the extra bulk likely means larger sensors, better cooling, or a bigger battery.

The front stays true to Sony's long-running formula: a flat 6.5-inch display, symmetrical top and bottom bezels, no notch, and a front camera sitting in the top bezel. Stereo speakers flank the screen on both sides. It's a conservative front panel in a world of punch-holes and under-display cameras — and Sony's fans tend to like it that way.

Brand under pressure

The design change is hard to read as anything other than a concession to market reality. Sony fell out of Japan's top-five smartphone brands in 2024, overtaken by Sharp, Xiaomi, Oppo, and Google Pixel, according to Gadget Hacks. The Xperia 1 VII — launched in Europe at €1,499 / £1,399 with no US release — also ran into serious software defects that forced a replacement program starting in July 2025. Sony's CEO publicly called Xperia "very important to us," which is the kind of statement brands make when a product line is in trouble.

What we still don't know

The CAD renders cover physical geometry only — no chipset, battery capacity, or camera sensor specs are confirmed. Expect a next-generation flagship chip, most likely Snapdragon 8 Elite or its successor, but that's speculation for now. Sony has historically announced new Xperia flagships in May and shipped them in June, which puts the VIII on a probable May announcement / June 2026 launch window. US availability remains unconfirmed; the VII skipped the American market entirely, and there's no indication the VIII will be different.
