Gothic Remake's NPCs Remember Everything You Do — Including Murder

Gothic Remake launches June 5, 2026 on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S, and developer Alkimia Interactive wants players to know upfront: the game is watching. Every theft, every brawl, every killing gets logged by the world's NPCs — and the consequences stack up fast. At €49.99 on PC and €59.99 on consoles, it's priced well below the current AAA ceiling, but it's making no concessions on difficulty.

The reputation system

Game director Reinhard Pollice told PC Gamer that the crime and punishment system from the 2001 original is not just preserved — it's deeper. Steal something and your reputation takes a hit. Get caught killing someone and word spreads through the whole faction; they stop talking to you entirely. It's the kind of social consequence most modern RPGs quietly dropped years ago.

Combat doesn't automatically mean death, either. A defeated enemy passes out first, giving the player a choice: take their stuff and leave, or finish the job. But murder has a cost, and Pollice is clear that it should feel like one. Players can also repair damaged relationships by returning stolen items — each one is flagged clearly — and avoiding further aggression.

One new wrinkle: players can toss a piece of meat to lure predators toward enemies, letting the wildlife do the dirty work. It's a small mechanical touch that fits the game's broader immersion-first philosophy.

No map, no markers

Pollice has also confirmed there's no minimap and no quest markers — a design choice PC Gamer pressed him on. His answer: "We very strictly kept that. We were thinking about making it optional, but we felt like even that doesn't feel right." Navigation relies entirely on in-game maps and environmental cues.

The Nyras Prologue demo, released in February 2025, pulled 77% positive reviews on Steam — a solid signal that the friction-heavy approach has an audience. With over 50 hours of gameplay and a world that reacts to faction alignment and player choices, Gagadget notes it's shaping up as a credible alternative to the hand-holding mainstream.

Pre-orders are open now on Steam, GOG, PlayStation, and Xbox. PC pre-orders include a free soundtrack; console pre-orders include a free copy of the original Gothic.
