Sony 1000X The ColleXion: $649 luxury headphones built for collectors, not audiophiles
Sony is preparing to launch the most expensive headphones in its 1000X lineup. Leaked details point to a May 19, 2026 global release for the 1000X The ColleXion, priced at $649 in the US and £549 in the UK — roughly 40% above the WH-1000XM6 and higher than Apple's AirPods Max 2. The pitch is premium materials and exclusivity, not a new generation of sound.
The look, not the leap
The ColleXion steps away from the XM6's plastic build. A Reddit beta tester, cited by leaker billbil-kun, reports faux leather, metal hinges, and a hard magnetic-clasp case in the box. The tradeoff: the headphones are non-foldable and weigh 312g — about 60g heavier than the XM6. The same tester flagged no major audio improvement over the WH-1000XM5, which is worth noting at this price.

On paper, the internals are strong. Sony's new V3 processor handles audio upscaling via DSEE Ultimate and powers 360 Reality Audio with head-tracking. A 12-microphone ANC system adapts to your environment, while a separate 6-mic array with AI noise reduction handles calls. Other features include a 10-band EQ in the Sony app, Adaptive Sound Control, Speak-to-Chat, Quick Attention, and multipoint Bluetooth. Battery life sits at 24 hours with ANC on, and a 5-minute quick charge delivers 90 minutes of playback, per Notebookcheck.
The price question
At $649, the ColleXion sits in rare company. The AirPods Max 2 retail at $549, and Bowers & Wilkins' PX8 — a genuine audiophile alternative — lands around the same $649 mark. Sony's historical strength has been value: the XM series consistently offered class-leading ANC at fair prices. The ColleXion breaks that pattern. The "X" in the name reportedly marks ten years of the 1000X line, and SoundGuys describes it as a collector-focused limited edition rather than a direct XM7 successor.
What to watch
None of this is official yet. Sony has made no announcement, and no US or UK retailers have posted pre-order listings. If the May 19 date holds, expect confirmation soon. For most buyers, the WH-1000XM6 at $449 remains the smarter pick. The ColleXion looks like Sony testing whether its brand can carry luxury pricing on design alone — without the sonic proof to back it up.
