Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 8: A slimmer hinge and not much else

Samsung's Galaxy Z Flip 8 is set to launch on July 22, 2026, at a dedicated Unpacked event in London — the first time Samsung has held a Z-series launch outside Seoul or the US. The timing is deliberate: Apple's iPhone Fold is expected in September, and Samsung wants its clamshell story told first. Based on leaks and supply-chain reports, the Flip 8 will be lighter and slightly thinner when folded, but the core hardware you've been waiting to see upgraded simply isn't getting one.

The look and feel

The most tangible change is a redesigned hinge that shaves roughly 0.5mm off the folded thickness. Samsung is also expected to widen the chassis slightly — good news for anyone who uses the outer display seriously — and reduce weight by around 10% compared to the Z Flip 7's 188g. Leak estimates range from 150g to 180g, but even at the high end that's a meaningful difference in your pocket. The display crease is also said to be less visible and less tactile than before.

The claim vs. the spec sheet

Beyond the physical redesign, the Flip 8 is largely frozen. Battery capacity stays at 4,300mAh and charging tops out at 25W — a spec Samsung has held since the Z Flip 4 in 2022. The Motorola Razr Plus, by comparison, charges at 30W with a larger battery. The 50MP/12MP camera system carries over unchanged from the Flip 6, and there are no reported upgrades to speakers or haptics.

The chip is new: an Exynos 2600, the same 2nm processor inside the Galaxy S26, with no Snapdragon variant confirmed anywhere in the world, per Tech Advisor. That's a meaningful performance step up from the Flip 7, but it won't fix a slow charge.

Samsung will almost certainly lean on Galaxy AI features to compensate for the hardware restraint — expect the marketing to emphasize software smarts over silicon counts.

Price and competition

US pricing is expected at $1,099, matching the Z Flip 7 exactly. UK buyers should see the same £1,049 hold. A Korean supply-chain source flagged a possible slight increase due to the new hinge engineering and production costs, but no confirmed EU or US price rise has been reported.

That price stability is probably Samsung's strongest play right now. The iPhone Fold is expected to launch at significantly more — early estimates point north of $2,000. Samsung is betting that a familiar price, a lighter frame, and a two-month head start are enough to own the clamshell shelf before Apple arrives. Whether that holds once reviews hit in late July is another question entirely.
