iOS 27 lets you swap Siri's AI brain — but Gemini gets the best seat

Starting with iOS 27, iPhone users can choose which AI model handles tasks like writing assistance and image generation — Claude, Gemini, or ChatGPT, not just Siri. Apple is expected to make the announcement formally on June 8 at WWDC, with iOS 27 scheduled for a fall 2026 release. For anyone tired of Siri's limitations, this is the most significant shift to Apple Intelligence yet.

The Extensions layer

Apple is calling the new framework Extensions. Third-party AI services plug into it and gain access to Siri, Writing Tools, and Image Playground on request. Users pick their preferred model for specific tasks — a setup closer to Android's default app flexibility than anything Apple has offered before.

The catch: Google Gemini is not just another option in the list. Apple sealed a multi-year deal worth roughly $1 billion per year to make Gemini the native foundation model inside iOS 27. Claude, ChatGPT, and any future additions arrive as opt-in add-ons on top of that layer, per MacRumors. Whether that structural advantage matters day-to-day depends on how Apple implements the handoff — something WWDC should clarify.

Voice tells you who's talking

Apple is building in a transparency mechanism: Siri keeps its own recognizable voice, while responses routed through Gemini or Claude play back in those services' distinct voices. The moment the voice changes, you know your query has left Apple's servers and gone to a third party. It's a small but practical signal for privacy-conscious users.

The settlement backdrop

The timing is pointed. Apple simultaneously settled a $250M class-action lawsuit over delayed AI Siri features — the very capabilities it promised and didn't deliver on schedule. US device owners who bought eligible iPhones between June 10, 2024 and March 29, 2025 can claim between $25 and $95 per device once the claims window opens in around 45 days.

OpenAI's position shifts

Until now, ChatGPT was the only third-party AI wired into Apple Intelligence. iOS 27 changes that math. Claude enters as a genuine native option, and Gemini steps in as the privileged foundation model — putting OpenAI's first-mover advantage under real pressure for the first time. Whether regulators at the FTC or UK CMA take interest in Gemini's structural preference over other models is an open question heading into WWDC.
