Subnautica 2 Early Access starts May 14 with co-op built in from day one

Subnautica 2 hits Early Access on May 14, 2026, and developer Unknown Worlds is promising a launch build far larger than the original game's 2014 early entry. The sequel arrives on Steam, Epic Games Store, Microsoft Store, Xbox Series X|S, and Xbox Game Pass (Ultimate and PC tiers) at $29.99 — double the $14.99 price point of both predecessors. Two years of continuous updates are planned before a full 1.0 release.

What's in at launch

The day-one build includes multiple biomes, dozens of creatures, base-building mechanics, vehicles, and — for fans of the first game's most terrifying moments — Leviathans. A partial story is also present, with additional narrative chapters rolling out over the Early Access period alongside new biomes, craftables, and community-driven improvements. Unknown Worlds' track record with the original Subnautica and Below Zero gives that roadmap some credibility: both games delivered on their Early Access promises.

The headline addition to the formula is four-player co-op, and it's worth being specific about how it works. This isn't a mode grafted onto a solo game after the fact. According to Xbox Wire (Official), the multiplayer architecture was designed in from the ground up — crossplay between PC and Xbox is supported from day one. That said, co-op remains entirely optional. Every mechanic works solo, and the game is built as a single-player experience first.

Platform gaps and pricing

One notable absence: PlayStation 5. Both Subnautica (2018) and Below Zero (2021) eventually came to PS5, but the sequel will skip Sony's console for the entire Early Access window. No timeline for a PS5 version at 1.0 has been confirmed. Nintendo Switch 2 is also excluded for now.

The $29.99 price applies to the US; regional pricing will be localized, but exact UK and European figures haven't been published yet by Unknown Worlds. The price is confirmed to increase at the 1.0 launch, so Early Access is the cheaper entry point. Game Pass inclusion softens that barrier for subscribers — though only on Ultimate and PC tiers.

The setup for Subnautica 2 sends players back into the deep for a new Alterra Corporation mission on an entirely different ocean planet. Things go sideways, survival takes over. The core loop — explore, build, survive — carries over from the original, scaled up for a larger world and a co-op crew of up to four. Check the Steam Store (Official) for system requirements and wishlist options ahead of the May 14 launch.
