Sony raises PS Plus Essential prices for new subscribers starting May 20
Sony is raising the price of PlayStation Plus Essential for new subscribers starting May 20, 2026, but has declined to name which markets are affected — leaving millions of players guessing whether they're in scope. The monthly plan climbs from $10 to $11 (£6.99 to £7.99 in the UK), while the three-month plan rises by $3 to $28. The 12-month plan is untouched.
Who pays more
The increase applies only to new subscribers "in select regions," per Sony's announcement. Existing members keep their current rate as long as their subscription stays active — with one catch: if it lapses and you resubscribe, you'll be bumped to the new price. Turkey and India are exceptions to that protection; all subscribers there pay the new rates on renewal regardless of when they first signed up.
Sony attributed the hike to "ongoing market conditions" without further detail, a vague formulation it also used during a wave of increases that hit over 20 countries in April 2025, per Notebookcheck. That wave targeted Latin America, Southeast Asia, and Oceania. Europe and the UK were spared then — but both regions were hit during a similar expansion in 2023, which sets a precedent worth watching.

The annual loophole
The 12-month plan remains unchanged, confirms Push Square. That means anyone who locks in an annual subscription before the new pricing takes hold avoids the increase entirely. It's the same arbitrage window that appeared during the 2023 hikes, and the same one savvy subscribers are already racing to exploit. If you're on a month-to-month plan, the 13% increase on the monthly tier is the most painful — the kind of quiet price creep that adds up fast for casual players who don't play consistently enough to justify a longer commitment.
The bigger picture
The timing is awkward for Sony. Microsoft recently moved in the opposite direction, cutting the price of Xbox Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass — though new Call of Duty titles now arrive in the catalog with a delay of over a year. Sony has not said whether the Extra or Premium tiers will follow Essential with their own increases.
For now, the practical advice is simple: if you're an existing subscriber, keep your subscription active and consider switching to the annual plan before May 20.
