Fallout Remaster in 2027, Elder Scrolls VI Not Until 2028–2029, Says Xbox Insider

If you're waiting for The Elder Scrolls VI, brace yourself: a well-connected Xbox insider now estimates it won't arrive until 2028 or 2029. That puts the gap between Skyrim (2011) and its successor at 17 to 18 years — and leaves Microsoft without a blockbuster RPG from Bethesda for the foreseeable future.

The prediction

Windows Central senior editor Jez Corden made the call on the Xbox Two Podcast on May 22, 2026. According to Jez Corden (The Gamer, May 24 2026), a Fallout remaster — almost certainly Fallout 3 — is targeting 2027, with a remaster of New Vegas reportedly to follow. Elder Scrolls VI, meanwhile, is "still very far away." Corden's read: Bethesda is trying to accelerate remasters of older games to plug the release gap while full production on TES6 continues.

Full production on The Elder Scrolls VI only began in late 2023, after Starfield shipped in September of that year. A 2028–2029 window would represent a standard five-to-six-year AAA development cycle — though Starfield's mixed reception at launch raises questions about whether the extra time will translate into a stronger product.

None of these dates are confirmed. Bethesda and Microsoft have made no official announcements. As GameRant analysis notes, Todd Howard himself asked fans in March 2026 to "pretend the TES6 announcement never happened" — a clear signal the studio is nowhere near ready to talk specifics.

What it means for Xbox

The timing is awkward for Microsoft. PlayStation has maintained strong momentum in 2025–2026 with exclusive titles, and Bethesda's tentpole RPGs have historically been a key reason to choose Xbox or Game Pass. A 2027 Fallout remaster keeps the brand alive, but it's not the same as a new game — and Game Pass subscriber retention increasingly depends on compelling first-party releases rather than third-party filler.

Xbox Games Showcase on June 7 could surface news on either title, though a full reveal for TES6 seems unlikely given Howard's recent comments. For now, the Fallout remaster is the more realistic near-term bet — and fans of the series will at least have something to look forward to before the decade is out.
