Capcom has released a free demo for Resident Evil Requiem on every current platform — PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, Steam, and the Epic Games Store — as of May 26, 2026. The game already sold 7 million copies in under two months, making it the fastest-selling entry in the franchise's history. If you haven't picked it up yet, this is the easiest way to see what the fuss is about.

No pre-launch hype needed

Unusually, Capcom skipped a demo before Requiem's original release — the studio said it wanted to focus on polishing the game and avoid story spoilers. That gamble paid off. The 7 million sales milestone arrived roughly two months after launch, a figure it took the RE4 Remake an entire year to reach. Requiem now sits in the top five Resident Evil games of all time by US dollar sales.

Critical reception backed up the commercial performance. The game holds a 9.4 Metacritic user score — the highest of any Resident Evil title. Director Koshi Nakanishi confirmed the sales milestone via Instagram in late April.

What the demo gives you

The demo lets you play through a slice of the game at no cost. One important caveat: progress does not carry over to the full version. If you buy Requiem after finishing the demo, you start from scratch.

The Switch 2 version is worth flagging separately. It uses DLSS upscaling to hit a visual quality roughly on par with Xbox Series S — better than many expected from a portable device. PC remains the dominant platform by sales volume, accounting for around 58% of copies sold globally.

What's next for Requiem

Capcom has confirmed that a major story expansion is coming later in 2026. There are also unconfirmed reports suggesting a second expansion may follow. The PS Store Days of Play promotion was running a 30% discount on the full game through June 10 — worth checking if that window is still live where you are.

The demo is available now with no announced end date. Gematsu confirmed global availability with no regional restrictions.
