Meta launches paid subscriptions for Instagram, Facebook, and WhatsApp

Meta is rolling out paid subscriptions across Instagram, Facebook, and WhatsApp globally, starting as low as $2.99 a month. The move gives everyday users access to features previously tested with a small group — and signals Meta's push to build revenue streams beyond advertising. With $125–$145 billion in AI infrastructure spending projected for 2026, the company needs new money coming in.

The plans

Meta's head of product Naomi Gleit announced three new Plus tiers on May 27, 2026:

- WhatsApp Plus — $2.99/month - Instagram Plus — $3.99/month - Facebook Plus — $3.99/month

The Instagram and Facebook plans center on Stories. Subscribers can post Stories that last 48 hours instead of the standard 24, see who viewed them, browse other people's Stories anonymously, send animated super-reactions, and customize their Facebook and Messenger app icons. Meta hasn't published the full feature list yet.

These plans are separate from Meta Verified — the existing badge-and-support subscription that runs from $11.99/month for individuals. Plus plans do not remove ads. That's a key difference from the ad-free Facebook and Instagram option Meta introduced in Europe in 2023 to comply with GDPR. The new tiers are about cosmetics and creator tools, not data privacy.

The AI angle

Meta is also testing a separate AI subscription lineup under the Meta AI brand. Two consumer tiers — Meta One Plus at $7.99/month and Meta One Premium at $19.99/month — are entering testing in Singapore, Guatemala, and Bolivia starting June 2026. At $7.99, Meta One Plus undercuts ChatGPT Plus ($20/month) significantly, positioning Meta AI as a budget-friendly alternative.

Two higher-tier professional plans, Meta One Essential ($14.99/month) and Meta One Advanced ($49.99/month), are being tested separately in Saudi Arabia, Morocco, Thailand, and Bangladesh. These target creators and businesses and include verification and enhanced reach tools. No European or US test markets have been announced for these tiers yet.

What to expect

The global rollout of the Plus plans is live now, though per TechCrunch access is being phased in — some users may see the option later than others. The AI plans remain in limited testing with no confirmed wider launch date. For most users, nothing changes unless they choose to subscribe; ads stay whether you pay or not.
