God of War Laufey announced: Kratos' dead wife gets her own PS5 game
Sony has officially announced God of War Laufey, a new entry in the franchise starring Faye — the deceased wife of Kratos — revealed during the June 3 State of Play broadcast with over 20 minutes of gameplay. The game is a PS5 exclusive with no release date announced, and no PC version has been confirmed. If you were hoping to play it on a gaming rig, don't hold your breath: Sony has been pulling back from PC ports, and Laufey fits that pattern.
The setup
The story runs parallel to God of War (2018), which opened with the funeral of Kratos' wife. Faye doesn't stay dead. She wakes up in the Everywhen — an afterlife realm for divine beings that pulls together multiple mythologies, not just Norse. Her mission: restore the original fate of Kratos and Atreus to ensure an ancient prophecy plays out. The scope looks bigger than past entries, blending familiar lore with new mythological settings including Asian mythology.
Combat leans into mobility and aerial gameplay, with a magic sword at the center. Faye doesn't fight alone — allies join her throughout, including Phranque, a cosmic cube voiced by Jack Quaid (The Boys). Deborah Ann Woll (Daredevil, True Blood) voices Faye herself. The project is directed by Ariel Lawrence, a 17-year Santa Monica Studio veteran, with Cory Barlog — who directed the acclaimed 2018 game — also involved, per VGC.
The exclusivity play
Laufey arriving as a PS5-only title is a deliberate move. Sony has been tightening its exclusivity strategy for big single-player games after years of porting them to PC. This puts Laufey in the same lane as a major annual PS5 exclusive — a direct counter to Microsoft's Game Pass approach of putting everything on as many platforms as possible.
A wishlist is live on PlayStation, but pre-orders aren't open yet. No pricing or edition details have been announced. A mid-2027 launch window has been floated by industry watchers, but Sony has given no official guidance.
The trailer suggests the cinematic production quality has taken another step up. For fans of the 2018 reboot and Ragnarök, this looks like a continuation of that tone — just through a completely new perspective.
