Stronghold 4 announced as a prequel, with a free demo on June 23
The Stronghold series is returning with its first mainline sequel in five years — and this time it has the budget and the star power to match its ambitions. Firefly Studios revealed Stronghold 4 at the PC Gaming Show on June 7, 2026. Built on Unreal Engine 5, it's a prequel set in medieval England, and a free demo lands on Steam on June 23.
The pitch
Stronghold 4 puts you in the boots of Penryn of Wethel, a shepherd who rises through the ranks to become a lord and take on the most powerful rulers in the land. That narrative thread runs through a full story campaign, voiced by a cast that includes Ben Starr, Samantha Béart, Walles Hamonde, and Harry McEntire — recognisable names from games and prestige TV.
The core loop stays familiar: build castles, fortify walls, manage your population, and field an army capable of defending everything you've built. Firefly is leaning into the visual upgrade UE5 allows, pushing for a more realistic look than any previous entry.
A franchise betting on its legacy
London-based Firefly Studios has been part of Devolver Digital since June 2021, and Stronghold 4 is the clearest sign yet that the acquisition was meant to back a bigger production. The original Stronghold launched in 2001 and became a cult hit, particularly in the UK and Europe. The most recent remaster — Stronghold Crusader: Definitive Edition — sold 250,000 copies in its first three weeks, per Firefly's own figures, confirming there's still a real audience for this type of game.
The medieval England setting and the British and Irish voice cast feel like a deliberate nod to where the series' identity was forged. Whether that nostalgia hook translates into a deep strategy game remains to be seen.
What's confirmed
The free demo is available on Steam from June 23. The full Early Access release is scheduled for Steam by the end of 2026. Pricing has not been confirmed. No console release has been announced.
