State of Decay 3 finally has something concrete to show: 72 uncut minutes of alpha gameplay, shared publicly by YouTuber and Players Council member Brian Menard after a visit to Undead Labs' studio. The footage is the first real look at a game announced back in 2020 that spent years in development limbo, complete with a fake zombie deer in its debut trailer that was later confirmed to have never been in the game. The February 2027 release window is now official, per Xbox Wire, and the game is coming to Xbox Series X|S, PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Game Pass on day one.

What the alpha shows

The Brian Menard YouTube footage covers the early game from the start — clearing infected zones called Plague Nests using a node-destruction mechanic, scavenging for weapons, managing base resources, and driving. Combat is noticeably harder than State of Decay 2, with a revised skill system that gates headshots behind character progression. Resource loops feel demanding, leaning into survival pressure rather than easing new players in. Because this is an early alpha build, individual mechanics may shift before launch, but the overall systems appear functional and coherent.

Co-op is the design center of gravity this time. Undead Labs worked with Obsidian Entertainment on the shared-world architecture, supporting up to four players simultaneously. The map is roughly four times the size of State of Decay 2's, built on Unreal Engine 5 with technical support from The Coalition — the studio behind Gears of War.

Game Pass, price, and what we still don't know

The day-one Game Pass inclusion is the headline business decision here. Unlike Baldur's Gate 3, which skipped Game Pass at launch to prioritize retail sales, State of Decay 3 follows the Starfield model — available on day one to subscribers at no extra cost. That's good news if you're already paying for Game Pass Ultimate; less so if you were hoping a premium price tag signaled a more polished product.

Menard released the footage with no NDA restrictions, which suggests Undead Labs is confident enough in the 2027 date to invite public scrutiny — notable given Microsoft's recent track record of delays on first-party titles.

Alpha playtests began in May 2026, with more waves planned through the year.

What's still missing: no word on regional pricing for a standalone purchase, no server location details for co-op latency, and no confirmation of whether the Obsidian shared-world tech will require always-online play. Those answers should come closer to the February 2027 window.
