Light Flip is a $299 no-nonsense clamshell for people who want off the scroll
Light, the startup behind the minimalist Light Phone, has just announced the Light Flip — a 5G clamshell priced at $299 that runs a stripped-down OS with no social media, no browser, and no app store. Co-founded by Tan Kaiwei, who previously worked on the original Motorola Razr, the company is pitching the Flip directly at Gen Z users who want a working phone without the compulsive scroll. Pre-orders are open now at thelightphone.com, with shipping set for April 2027.
The phone itself
The Light Flip folds open to a 2.8-inch OLED display and a physical T9 keypad. There is no external cover screen — just a small notification light on the outside. If you want to see who messaged you, you open the phone. That design choice is deliberate: Light wants to break the habit of constantly glancing at a screen.
Hardware specs are modern enough to be genuinely useful. The Flip supports 5G and 4G LTE, charges over USB-C, keeps a 3.5mm headphone jack, and uses a replaceable 1,800mAh battery. The 12MP camera draws from a 50MP sensor, per Notebookcheck global, so image quality should exceed what the output resolution implies. Six colors are available, from black to pink and yellow, in a plastic body that keeps the weight down.
Software runs on LightOS — alarm, calendar, calculator, and not much else. Light has promised an SDK so developers can add utilities, but the gatekeeping stays: no TikTok, no Instagram, no browser rabbit holes. A community program called "Flip Your Life" launches alongside it, per TechCrunch, offering biweekly newsletters and peer support for people trying to cut screen time.
The price gap is real
In the US and UK, flip phones are almost exclusively a premium category. The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 7 starts above £1,000 in the UK, and the Motorola Razr 70 Ultra sits in the £800–900 range. Light Flip at $299 — or $39 per month on a two-year plan — is a different conversation entirely.
UK pricing hasn't been confirmed, and international orders will attract import tax and customs fees on top of the base price. No UK carrier deals have been announced, and no major retailers are listed yet. The April 2027 ship date is nine months out, which gives Samsung and Motorola time to respond — but also gives Light time to build a pre-order base before a single unit ships.
For anyone already curious about digital detox devices, this is the most affordable entry point in years. Whether a T9 keypad and a 2.8-inch screen is the trade-off worth making is a different question.
