Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 may come to Switch 2 — if the hardware can keep up
One of the best-reviewed games of 2025 could land on Nintendo Switch 2 — but only if the hardware is powerful enough to run it properly. Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, the RPG from French studio Sandfall Interactive, has sold 5 million copies worldwide and swept multiple Game of the Year awards. Right now it's only available on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
The technical wall
An insider known as NateTheHate claimed earlier this year that a Switch 2 port is planned for 2026. The developers have since addressed the question themselves, and the answer is cautiously honest. In an Automaton-Media interview, Sandfall CTO Tom Guillermin confirmed the studio is interested but flagged a real obstacle: Switch 2's GPU output sits at roughly 3.07 TFLOPS docked and 1.71 TFLOPS in handheld mode — far below the PS5's 10.28 TFLOPS. Expedition 33 was built on Unreal Engine 5 and relies heavily on Lumen (real-time lighting) and Nanite (dense geometry), two systems that are notoriously demanding on GPU resources.
Guillermin's position is straightforward: the game's visual quality was central to its design, and a port that can't maintain that standard isn't worth releasing. As Gaming Bolt noted, the studio's small size also limits how many engineers can work on optimization simultaneously.
Where this stands
CEO Guillaume Broche confirmed separately that the studio is "interested" but said it's too early to make any announcement. The path forward likely depends on Epic Games' own UE5 optimization roadmap for lower-powered hardware — Sandfall is watching engine improvements before committing.
Other demanding titles have made it to Switch 2 — Cyberpunk 2077 and Hogwarts Legacy both arrived on the platform — but Expedition 33's Lumen and Nanite dependency makes it a tougher engineering problem than either of those. No release window, pricing, or official confirmation exists yet. If a port does arrive in 2026, it would open the game up to a large Nintendo audience that currently has no way to play it.
