China loses fourth rocket of 2026 in another launch failure
China's Long March 7A rocket failed shortly after liftoff from the Wenchang Space Launch Center in August 2026, destroying an undisclosed payload just 85 seconds into flight. It marks the fourth Chinese launch failure of the year — a run of losses that is beginning to look less like bad luck and more like a structural problem. For a program that targets around 140 launches in 2026, the pattern is hard to ignore.
The failure
The rocket's first stage gave out at roughly the 85-second mark, with the vehicle breaking apart on live broadcast before debris fell into the ocean. China's state aerospace corporation CASC confirmed the failure but offered no detail on the payload. That silence is typical for missions analysts believe carry military hardware — in this case, either an optical reconnaissance satellite or a classified communications device, according to TechTimes (July 2026).
The Long March 7A is a three-stage medium-lift rocket designed for heavy satellites bound for geostationary transfer orbit. A pattern, not a one-off
This failure follows a difficult January that SCMP called "Black Saturday" — two simultaneous failures on a single day involving a Long March 3B and a commercial Ceres-2 rocket. April brought a third loss when the Tianlong-3 vehicle failed. The Long March 7A adds a fourth.
Complicating matters further, a YF-75 upper-stage engine fault in January grounded the entire classified geostationary manifest for five months. The Long March 7A shares that engine stage with the Long March 3B, so both programs were frozen until a return-to-flight in June 2026 — creating a backlog of sensitive missions now being launched under pressure.
Speed versus reliability
China's push to match SpaceX's launch cadence is the thread running through all four failures. SpaceX absorbs setbacks through rapid iteration and reusable hardware; Chinese state rockets operate under manifest rigidity and limited public transparency. When a rocket line is grounded for five months and then rushed back into service, the margin for error shrinks. The US Space Force has been watching China's geostationary constellation expand — the TJS program alone has logged more than 20 successful missions — so each failure does slow a program that Washington tracks closely. Whether Beijing uses this setback to slow down and fix root causes, or pushes harder to close the schedule gap, will define the rest of its 2026 manifest.
