Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots has been locked to PlayStation 3 since 2008 — and that changes on August 27, 2026. Konami's Metal Gear Solid Master Collection Vol. 2 releases across PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC, Nintendo Switch, and Switch 2, marking the first time MGS4 is officially playable outside of Sony's aging hardware. At $49.99, it's $10 cheaper than Vol. 1's launch price.

Why MGS4 was stuck

The PS3 used a custom Cell processor — an unusual architecture that made porting MGS4 notoriously difficult. Emulation remained impractical for years, meaning the only legal way to play Solid Snake's final chapter was to keep a working PS3 around. As Gaming Bolt noted, MGS4 became the poster child for game preservation failures: a critically acclaimed title effectively disappearing behind obsolete hardware. A native commercial port is a cleaner solution than any workaround fans managed to piece together.

What's in the collection

Vol. 2 bundles three games. MGS4: Guns of the Patriots is the headliner — the 2008 PS3 epic that closes out Solid Snake's story. Peace Walker (HD version) is the Big Boss spin-off set between MGS3 and Ground Zeroes, and it supports online co-op for up to six players. Ghost Babel, the 2000 Game Boy Color entry, rounds out the package. Digital soundtrack files and lore books are included as bonus content.

The ports themselves hold up. High-resolution textures, improved lighting, anti-aliasing, and updated controls make these games look at home on modern displays. Kotaku's review called the release "a historic moment" — pointing out that, combined with Vol. 1 and the separately available MGS5, the entire main franchise is now playable on current hardware for the first time. MGS5 is available on PS5, Xbox, and PC but not on Switch.

The scores

Critics are firmly on board. The Metacritic aggregate sits at 84–85 points depending on platform, and OpenCritic puts it at 83 with an 85% recommendation rate. That's a stronger showing than Vol. 1, which drew more mixed reactions over its bonus content and price.

Metal Gear Solid Master Collection Vol. 2 launches August 27, 2026, at $49.99 on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC (Steam), Nintendo Switch, and Nintendo Switch 2.
