If you've ever wanted a phone with actual buttons that can still run WhatsApp, the Douqin J36 is worth knowing about. The Chinese manufacturer launched the J36 on JD.com at $91, pairing a classic keypad form factor with Android 13 and a voice assistant. It won't land on Amazon anytime soon — but it fills a real niche.
The hardware
The J36 looks like a phone from 2005 but runs a modern OS. The screen is 2.8 inches at 480×640 resolution — small by today's standards, but practical for a keypad device. Under the hood sits a MediaTek MTK8766V chip, a processor more commonly found in budget tablets than phones, paired with 3GB of RAM and 32GB of storage. That's tight but workable for the intended use case.
Android 13 means this isn't just a calls-and-texts device. Google Play Store support is confirmed, so apps like WhatsApp, Instagram, and TikTok all run. The built-in Qin AI voice assistant handles practical tasks — dialing a contact, enabling Bluetooth, or dictating a message — rather than just answering trivia. Parental controls let adults restrict screen time or block specific apps, which makes the J36 a plausible option for handing to a child.
Two variants, one key difference
Douqin offers the J36 in two configurations. The standard version has a 13MP rear camera and a 2MP front camera. The second variant ships with no rear camera at all — designed for workplaces where photography is prohibited, such as secure facilities or factory floors. That no-camera option is a genuine differentiator: competitors like the Nokia 3210 4G and Unihertz Titan 2 don't offer it.
The J36 also includes an infrared port for controlling TVs and air conditioners, FM radio, and a 2,600mAh battery. For a 2.8-inch screen, that should comfortably cover a full day.
Availability is the catch
Right now, the J36 is only available through Chinese platforms — JD.com at $91 per the Official Qin phone store, and Alibaba for bulk B2B orders (minimum 300 units). There are no listings on Amazon.com or Amazon.co.uk. VoLTE band compatibility with AT&T;, Verizon, or EE has not been confirmed, so US and UK buyers should treat network compatibility as an open question.
