Mercedes cars will become biometric payment devices

A technology partnership between Daimler Mobility and Visa is turning German brand cars into a payment device: Mercedes will be equipped with a built-in fingerprint payment function. Thus, the introduction of passwords and the use of mobile devices for payment identification will become a thing of the past as the car itself will become a biometric payment device with Visa's delegated identification technology.

From spring 2022, Mercedes car owners in the UK and Germany will be able to pay for purchases using two-factor authentication via a fingerprint sensor. The technology will soon be available in other European markets. Purchases will be able to be made directly through the vehicle's electronic control unit or MBUX.

Mercedes Pay is a component of Daimler Mobility's digitalization strategy to become the first automotive company to incorporate the Visa Cloud Token Framework into its vehicles. It is a cloud-based security technology that provides greater flexibility across devices as it protects and removes sensitive transaction information by converting data into tokens and storing it securely.

The number of connected cars globally is projected to increase to more than 352 million in the next two years alone, and total payments from them will reach approximately $86 billion by 2025.
