Qualcomm explained why it named the new processor Snapdragon 8 Gen1. It turns out that everything is pretty commonplace.

On Qualcomm officially unveiled a new top processor for 2022 flagships this week - Snapdragon 8 Gen1. But why did the chip get this name? Explained by Don McGuire, Sr. vice president and director of Qualcomm marketing.

Why?

As a reminder, the predecessor was Snapdragon 888, so in this year everyone was waiting for the Snapdragon 898. And It was would be logical, since Qualcomm chips are easy to distinguish by numbers: it is clear that the Snapdragon 8 is better than the Snapdragon 7 series, and Snapdragon 888 is better than Snapdragon 870, and etc.

However, the new processor was named Snapdragon 8 Gen1. By According to a Qualcomm spokesman, everything is quite simple: the company simply does not enough would be numbers for the names of subsequent models. True, all it is not clear why Qualcomm decided to limit itself to 1000 and not go beyond her limits in the names of the chips.

In any case, in the future, it seems that we are waiting for Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, etc. Although, maybe Qualcomm will prepare other surprises.

In addition, Qualcomm intends to promote only Snapdragon brand in the future. For example, in the Chinese market Qualcomm did not add the company name at the beginning, but directly promoted the brand Snapdragon. Now this is happening in the global market as well - the processor is called Snapdragon 8 Gen1. The company believes that the combination of Qualcomm + Snapdragon negatively affects the name and promotion.
