Tesla recalls more than 1.6 million cars in China over autopilot and lock problems

Tesla is recalling more than 1.6 million cars in China to fix problems with autopilot features and locks that could lead to accidents.

According to China's State Administration of Market Regulation, both problems will be fixed with a free over-the-air software update. Drivers will not have to take their vehicles anywhere, the authority said.

The recall affects Tesla Model S, Model X, Model 3 and Model Y vehicles. While they are in use, drivers may "misuse" the driving assistance feature, "increasing the risk of vehicle collisions and creating a safety hazard", the agency said in a release.

In addition, more than 7,500 Model S and Model X vehicles have been recalled over concerns that the side door could unlock during a crash.

Earlier, U.S. regulators recalled about 2 million Tesla vehicles for similar reasons. The company disagreed with the authorities' findings, but promised to fix the problems with software updates.

Despite the recall, Tesla shares fell less than 1%.
