Tesla asks Texans not to charge electric cars, and miners had to shut down farms - all because of the abnormal heat wave
The abnormal heat wave in Texas has affected electric car owners and miners, making their lives much more difficult.
What's known
The company Tesla asked customers not to charge vehicles during peak hours (from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m.) in order to reduce the load on the power grid in Texas. A notice to that effect appears on electric vehicle screens.
The U.S. Electric Reliability Council of Texas, which manages the electric grid in the state, recommends that Texas residents avoid using high-powered appliances between 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. if possible.
The heat wave has also affected Texas miners. Large companies have been forced to shut down cryptocurrency mining equipment to reduce the load on the network. In normal operation it requires more than 1 GW of power, i.e. almost 1% of the total network capacity of the whole Texas. What's interesting, state authorities intend to allocate a quota of 5 GW to miners in the future.
