The Super Mario Bros. Movie has officially grossed $1 billion at the global box office after another weekend: $490 million in North America and $532 million internationally.

Here's What It Costs

The animated video game adaptation from Universal, Illumination and Nintendo debuted in cinemas on 5 April and has already grossed a whopping $204 million in its first 5 days. This was the biggest weekend of the year and the second biggest debut for an animated film.

After 26 days at the box office, the film has become the highest-grossing video game adaptation in history and the first game adaptation to reach a billion dollars in receipts.

It's also the first film of 2023 to break the $1 billion mark, and the fifth billion-dollar film since Pandemic began. It is now part of the "club" along with Spider-Man: No Way Home, Top Gun: Maverick, Jurassic World Dominion and Avatar: The Way of Water.

The film follows plumbers from Brooklyn known as Mario and Luigi, who are drawn into the mystical Mushroom Kingdom. Together with Princess Peach, they prepare to stop the mighty Bowser from total domination.
