What's the best RC crawler choice in $400-600 range?

Yo RC fam! Super stoked to finally dive into crawling after watching tons of YouTube vids. Got a budget of $400-600 for my first 1/10 scale rig (can stretch a bit if really worth it).

Been mainly looking at the Traxxas TRX-4 and Axial SCX10 III since they seem to be the go-to choices in this range. Also spotted the Redcat Everest-10 which is way cheaper - wondering if it's worth saving the cash or if I should stick with the premium options?

Looking for something that can:

  • Take a beating (cause I'm gonna crash for sure lol)
  • Handle parks and rocky terrain near me
  • Good parts availability when I break stuff
  • Decent for learning the basics

Also, should I set aside some of that budget for batteries and upgrades? Any must-have accessories I should know about?

Thanks in advance! Really appreciate any advice from you experienced crawlers! ๐Ÿ™

TRX-4 Sport (~$400) is your sweet spot here. Save the extra cash for a good battery/charger combo.. The full-feature TRX-4 is sick but honestly the Sport version has everything you need to start ๐Ÿ’ช

Set aside about $100 for a proper LiPo setup. The Redcat comes with a battery but you'll want to upgrade that pretty quick ๐Ÿ”‹

The Sport is plenty of crawler for learning. The fancy features on the full TRX-4 are cool but you won't miss them as a beginner. Save that cash for batteries and upgrades.

Been in the hobby 5+ years, here's the real deal:

TRX-4 Sport ($420):

  • Perfect beginner crawler
  • Tough as nails
  • Huge parts availability
  • Leaves room for battery/charger

SCX10 III ($530):

  • More advanced features
  • Better out of box performance
  • Might stretch your budget thin
  • Still need battery/charger

Redcat Everest-10 ($200):

  • Surprisingly capable
  • Ready to run package
  • Great learning platform
  • Upgrade as you go

Honestly? Start TRX-4 Sport. Perfect mix of quality and budget.

Ran all three. The Redcat's great if you're not sure about the hobby. But if you're committed, that TRX-4 Sport is worth every penny. Just get aluminum steering links first upgrade ๐Ÿค˜

Been running both TRX-4 and SCX10 III. The Axial just feels more premium tbh. Better steering geometry and weight distribution. But for a beginner? Probably overkill.......

7 years in the hobby and best thing I did was joining the local RC group. Learned more in two meetups than months of YouTube. Plus these dudes always have spare parts when you break something (and you will lol)

SCX10 III owner here - yeah it's at the top of your budget ($530) but the quality is insane. Portal axles and aluminum links out of the box. Just know you'll need another $100+ for electronics setup.

SCX10-3 is like buying a Ferrari as your first car. Amazing crawler but maybe too much for starting out? That's basically your whole budget on just the rig

my hot wheels collection worth more than these toys ๐Ÿคก

Yo, quick tip about crawlers - don't freak when it seems slow af. These things aren't built for speed, they're for torque. My TRX-4 barely hits 10mph but climbs like a mountain goat on steroids. You want that low speed control for the gnarly stuff.
