Lockheed Martin and RTX will develop a replacement for the Stinger short-range missile for the US Army

The US Army wants a new missile that will be a replacement for the Stinger. Two big companies will be working on it.

Here's What We Know

The U.S. Army needs a short-range missile that can resist interference, hit difficult targets, including unmanned aerial vehicles, and will be faster than the Stinger. The executive director of the military's missile and space programme said.

In September, the US Army awarded contracts to RTX and Lockheed Martin to develop a replacement for the Stinger. The project is expected to be completed no later than 2026, after which the company that wins the contract can begin small-scale production.

The prospective missile should have dimensions comparable to the Stinger. The US Army wants to use launchers like the Stryker SHORAD and Avenger air defence systems for launch.

Instead of the Stinger, the US Army will only get one next-generation missile, but both companies may get to the prototyping stage. However, the service will ultimately choose one manufacturer.
