China Successfully Tested New YF-79 Engine for Long March 9 Launch Vehicle

Chinese scientists have successfully tested the YF-79 engine for the Changcheng-9 rocket (Long March 9), which will be used in lunar exploration missions and deep-space flights.

Here's What We Know

The new YF-79 hydrogen-oxygen engine is designed for the third stage of a super-heavy rocket. Experts from the China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation (CASC) announced the successful completion of three ground tests.

The YF-79 weighs 25,000 kg and features an expander cycle. As we noted above, it is aimed at the third stage of the Changcheng-9 rocket. In total, Chinese specialists have developed four engines. The first and second stages will use four oxygen-kerosene engines YF-130 and two hydrogen-oxygen YF-90, respectively.

The Changzheng-9 will be able to launch 140,000 kilograms of payload into Earth orbit. The rocket will also be used to deliver cargo to the Moon and Mars. The maximum weight will be 50,000 kg and 44,000 kg, respectively.
