Boeing has changed its mind about creating a satellite internet service to compete with SpaceX Starlink, revoked its licence and will pay a $2.2m fine

American giant Boeing will not create its own satellite internet network. This was reported by a representative of the company.

Here's What We Know

The US Federal Communications Commission issued a permit to place 147 spacecraft in low-Earth orbit. This happened in 2021. Two years later, the American company decided to revoke the licence. Now it will have to pay a fine of $2.2 million.

Boeing wanted to get a permit in 2017. During this time, the situation in the satellite internet market has changed significantly. SpaceX now has a dominant position, providing satellite internet services for more than 2 million subscribers. The company has placed about 5,000 vehicles in orbit and will increase that number sixfold.

Boeing planned to provide V-band communications at 40-75 GHz. For this purpose, a test satellite went into orbit last year. The company does not rule out a return to the project, but the test spacecraft will be scrapped.
